PTAC Program Helps Regional Businesses Land $7.8 Million in Government Contracts In First Half of 2009
A program designed to assist area businesses in securing government contracts has helped generate $7.8 million in new contracts during the first half of 2009. The 298 contract awards reported by the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) of South Central Michigan are expected to create and retain 156 jobs in the seven county region.
"We are absolutely thrilled with these results and to see that PTAC and our area businesses have been so successful in generating new government contracts for this region," said Tim Daman, president and CEO of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC), which operates the PTAC sub-center serving Ingham, Eaton and Clinton Counties.
The PTACs of Michigan are not-for-profit organizations funded by the Defense Logistics Agency, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and local funding partners. The mission of the PTACs is to enhance national defense and economic development of the State of Michigan by assisting Michigan businesses in obtaining and performing on federal, state and local government contracts.
Businesses in the Greater Lansing region were able to secure a significant number of government contracts during the first half of 2009. Greater Lansing businesses landed 227 contract awards during the six-month period, totaling nearly $3.1 million. Those contracts are expected to create or retain 65 jobs in the tri-county area.
"When we launched the PTAC Sub Center at the Chamber one year ago, we knew there was long-term potential to bring more government contracts and jobs into the region," said Scott Fleming, President and CEO of the Enterprise Group of Jackson. "The strong start we've seen in 2009 is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we could realize over the next few years."
The PTAC Center located at the Lansing Regional Chamber office conducts a number of informational sessions on federal government contracting. Those sessions are designed to provide area businesses detailed information on how to get registered for government contracts, identify opportunities, develop marketing strategies and compete in the bid process. PTAC also links area manufacturers to a database that identifies potential government contracts. The database, known as the The Michigan Defense Capability Directory is a unique, internet-based search engine that will catalog the tremendous capabilities of Michigan manufacturers who are PTAC clients.
The PTAC of South Central Michigan covers Jackson, Branch, Hillsdale, Lenawee, Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties. The Enterprise Group of Jackson serves as the PTAC host organization and covers Jackson, Branch, Hillsdale and Lenawee counties. LRCC operates the PTAC sub-center covering the tri-county region.
