Health Care

With state of the art technology and the highest degree of professionalism, residents and visitors to the Lansing region rests assured that they have convenient access to the highest quality healthcare from emergency to long-term care services.

The Lansing region boasts health systems and facilities that are among the highest rated in the nation.

Ingham Regional Medical Center

In 1913, mothers came to Ingham to give birth. Today, Ingham Region Medical Center delivers more than 1,900 newborns annually in one room, Labor-Delivery-Recovery-Postpartum (LDRP) Suites that pamper moms and encourage birth as a family experience.

Ingham Regional Medical Center (IRMC) and Ingham Regional Orthopedic Hospital operate the region's largest open heart and orthopedic surgery programs. Together with Ingham's oncology, women's care, and a wide range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical services, IRMC consistently ranks among the nation's best hospitals in clinical quality and efficiency.

The hospital's national reputation and high-tech facilities also attract and retain talented clinical and professional staff to the Lansing region. With 2,500 employees, 690 affiliated physicians, 100 resident physicians in training, and over 800 volunteers, Ingham delivers health care to tens of thousands of our community members. IRMC is also a subsidiary of McLaren Health Care, mid-Michigan's largest health care system.

Ingham's long history of innovation was enhanced when the hospital acquired the highly advanced da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. This system assists surgeons in conducting a wide range of minimally invasive procedures, and offers patients less scarring and faster recovery times.  The $50 million Chi Heart & Surgery Center is a five-story, 158,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility. The Center brings mid-Michigan residents 10 new operating rooms, five new cardiac catheterization labs, a new surgical intensive care unit, a larger cardiac diagnostic area, an expanded radiology department, and 30 private patient rooms.

Sparrow Health System

Back in 1896, a group of women volunteered to care for the sick and injured. With $400 and a house on Ottawa Street, they founded Lansing's first healthcare service. From those humble beginnings emerged Sparrow Health System, Mid Michigan's leader in quality, compassionate and cost effective health care that is nationally recognized for excellence.

Sparrow Health System employs 7,000 associates, 1,600 volunteers and nearly 900 physicians. Sparrow Hospital this year unveiled the Sparrow Tower featuring a rooftop helipad, an emergency department with 62 private rooms, and Granger Pediatric Emergency Department, the region's first children's emergency room. Operating rooms accommodate advanced technology, including Sparrow's two da Vinci robots. Since 2005, Sparrow has performed 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries.

Sparrow Hospital is the regional center for cancer, heart and vascular services, trauma, pediatrics, orthopedics, neonatal intensive care and neuroscience. Through residency programs in partnership with Michigan State University, Sparrow annually trains over 200 residents. Sparrow has affiliate hospitals in St. Johns, Carson City and Ionia, dozens of satellite centers, Physicians Health Plan of Mid-Michigan, and the Michigan Athletic Club.

Sparrow, a not-for-profit charitable organization, provided $86.7 million in total benefits to community health in 2007, including free care to patients without the ability to pay, financial assistance to patients who can't pay their entire bill and health education for the community to help people avoid costly care in the future. Sparrow's 7,200 associates pay $11.6 million in state and local income taxes every year. In addition, Sparrow annually pays an additional $2.2 million in other state and local taxes.

In Ingham Regional Medical Center and Sparrow Health System, our region is fortunate to have two premier institutions that not only provide the best healthcare available, but also have made major investments in the people, infrastructure and overall quality of life in the community.
