The Startup Weekend: Maker Edition is the fifth of its kind in the U.S.; others have been held in Houston, Seattle, Raleigh and Atlanta.
At the press conference, East Lansing Mayor Triplett and Lansing Mayor Bernero will each present a proclamation to officially declare the second week in October as “Maker Week.” Lansing Maker Week organizers and community partners will share news on the “maker movement,” how Maker Week came to Michigan and highlights of the week’s events.
“This weeklong event is all about finding your inner maker, that passion to find or do something new and different. It emphasizes learning-through-doing in a social, informal environment,” said Jeff Smith, Director of New Economy Division at Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP). “It’s a chance for people to find new hobbies and business ideas. Some may become the next job creators for our state.”
Also part of Maker Week, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, a press conference will celebrate the opening of The Runway incubator, the first of its kind in the state focused on supporting fashion and design entrepreneurs. The media is invited to a full
tour of the incubator including the shared equipment and retail space, located at 300 S. Washington Sq. in Lansing.
