(Lansing, MI) – Kelly Rossman-McKinney, one of the original business leaders in Lansing who founded the ATHENA Award to promote women leaders, will herself be honored by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce as the 2013 ATHENA Award recipient. Rossman-McKinney, CEO of the strategic communications firm Truscott Rossman, will be honored at the annual ATHENA Award Luncheon on Thursday, December 12. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing.

"When you think of women business leaders in Michigan, one of the first names that come to mind is Kelly Rossman-McKinney,” said John Truscott, Rossman-McKinney’s partner and president of Truscott Rossman. "She blazed a path for women at a time when she had no peers. She started her own business as a single mother working out of her home and built it into one of the largest and most recognized public relations firms in the state. And she did it while lifting up and helping other women every step of the way.”

Rossman-McKinney, a nationally accredited public relations counselor, started her business in 1988 and was the first woman in the field of strategic communications. Her firm has consistently been ranked number one in terms of most influential public relations firms by MIRS newsletter, and she personally has been the number one PR professional four of the last five years. Her firm is one of only a handful in the country to win two Silver Anvil awards—the highest honor in the public relations industry. Her firm has won numerous other prestigious awards and recognitions.

Rossman-McKinney has served in leadership capacities for numerous organizations including: Greater Lansing Regional Chamber Political Action Committee (founding member), International ATHENA Conference Advisory Panel, Lansing Women’s Economic Club (founding member), Michigan Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Association of Michigan and Capital Area United Way Fundraising campaign chair.

Rossman-McKinney and her firm provide several hundred hours of in-kind service each year to groups that do not have funds to pay for public relations services. The firm has generously supported dozens of local charities with financial support and volunteer time. She is also well known for her passionate support in mentoring and helping women. She regularly volunteers her time to promote and consult young women on their career path.

The ATHENA Award presentation celebrates the potential of all women as leaders of the community and honors individuals who strive toward the highest levels of professional accomplishment, have excelled in their chosen field, and has devoted time and energy to their community, opening doors for other women to follow. The ATHENA award was created by former Lansing Chamber President Martha Mertz in 1982 and has since spread around the world.
