Small Business Saturday® Generates Sales for Area Retailers and Enthusiasm Among Local Shoppers

Small Business Saturday® Generates Sales for Area Retailers and Enthusiasm Among Local Shoppers

(Lansing, MI) – Whatever measure of success one might use, all signs point to Small Business Saturday starting the holiday season strong for local retailers and shoppers. Small Business Saturday, which is known as the Black Friday for small businesses, is held the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. Nationally, consumers spent $5.7 billion during the shop local campaign, which represents a 3.6% increase over last year. Though no specific sales are available in the Greater Lansing area, it was clear throughout the region that shoppers enthusiastically embraced the promotion.

"From Old Town to downtown and all across the entire region we heard positive reports from our member retailers and consumers that Small Business Saturday was a huge success,” said Tim Daman, President & CEO of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. "It was evident throughout the day that shoppers want and continue to support small retailers, restaurants and other independent businesses.”

Created by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday is designed as a day dedicated to supporting small businesses nationwide. Over 1,500 communities held shopping events in 50 states, up from 50 communities last year. The event has definitely resonated with Greater Lansing area shoppers.

"A lot of the products you’re going to find down here (Old Town) are hand-crafted products,” Theresa Thompson of Dewitt told WILX-TV 10, one of several media outlets that gave extensive coverage to Small Business Saturday. "You pay a little more for them but they’re beautiful and it’s worth it. It really is. It’s worth it.”

Based on the success of the event, many retailers say they are extending special promotions they had in place for Small Business Saturday.

"The enthusiasm with which shoppers have clearly embraced the concept of Small Business Saturday could lead to an expansion of the concept,” said Daman. "Why not offer a similar promotion on a quarterly basis? Such a move could be a real shot-in-the-arm to small businesses throughout the region.”
