Douglas J Offers Veterans a Fresh Start on Service

Douglas J Million Dollar Veterans Scholarship Scavenger Hunt Winners Announced

LANSING, MI – Douglas J is proud to announce the winner of their Lansing community Scavenger Hunt in celebration of the recent announcement for A Fresh Start on Service, Douglas J’s Million Dollar Veterans Scholarship.

"We are so thankful for our veterans and their service to our country,” said Scott Weaver, President of Douglas J Companies. "That’s why we are excited to be able to offer this scholarship, which will likely assist 200 veterans and their immediate families in getting to work.”

Community members from the Lansing, Royal Oak, Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor areas were invited to participate in a scavenger hunt to win one of several Douglas J care packages, each containing Aveda products and Douglas J Aveda Institute services totaling around $1,000. Care packages were hidden at veteran’s organizations in each community where there is a Douglas J Aveda Institute. Clues were posted on Douglas J’s Twitter and Facebook sites (Ann Arbor, East Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Royal Oak) starting on Tuesday, Feb. 4, with the announcement of the scholarship.

The clues led community members to VFW Post 6132 (Douglas Mac Donald Musicians Post, 3104 W Saint Joseph St. in Lansing). The winner of the $1,000 care package was Chuck Hallman of Lansing.

Douglas J has a 45 year history of providing high-quality experiences to guests, creating career opportunities for aspiring professionals in the salon industry, and investing in great causes that help our communities thrive. Keeping in line with their long-standing community support, Douglas J is now offering A Fresh Start on Service, a Million Dollar Veterans Scholarship to help veterans and their immediate families get to work.

As the first recipient of the scholarship, Laurie Smith, an Air Force veteran who attends the Douglas J Aveda Institute in Royal Oak, is a bit surprised at how well she’s enjoying her experience at the school.

"I was a little worried about starting the school. It’s a much different direction than I’ve ever gone in before. I love the people at the school – the instructors, the staff, the students – it’s a very encouraging and inclusive environment which is different than I’m used to. I very much enjoy it,” said Smith.

Smith looks forward to using her degree from Douglas J in a way that works just right for her.

"I lean more toward working for myself. It seems to be a good option for most veterans,” said Smith. "So I figure it’s something easy, that I can do on my own even while I’m beginning my business. I’m a single mom and I can do it out of my house if I had to.”
