TODAY: First Annual Grand American FishRodeo

Brand new summer event comes to Lansing

LANSING - This weekend marks the inaugural Grand American FishRodeo, a brand new summer event that will be held along the shores of the Grand River in Lansing.

The FishRodeo is a group of several simultaneous events held over the course of three days, June 12-14, 2014, along the path of the Grand River in downtown Lansing.

The inaugural Grand American FishRodeo will feature events celebrating our shared environmental and cultural heritage in Michigan, including kayak races, a fishy fashion show, evening country music concerts, and fishing contests.

"Anglers will be competing for big prizes," said tournament organizer Gib King, Fish and Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "There will be ample fish, and ample opportunities to win."

"We're also looking forward to welcoming amazing country musicians from all over the country to the first Grand American FishRodeo," said Terry Terry, co-founder and president of MICA. "The FishRodeo will be a celebration of Michigan's place as the water wonderland, but we also have a rich tradition of creativity and self-expression. A few of these acts are familiar to country music fans in Michigan, and there will be some outstanding national acts as well."

WHO:
Prominent country bands, talented anglers hoping to win prizes, diverse food vendors, teams of committed volunteers and crowds of enthusiastic attendees.

WHEN: The 2014 Grand American FishRodeo will take place 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM TODAY, Thursday, June 12, 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM Friday, June 13, and 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM Saturday, June 14. We’ll be offering free admission to "The Watering Hole" (our beverage tent) from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Thursday, and until 4:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.

WHAT: The FishRodeo will be a group of several simultaneous events held over the course of three days, June 12-14, along the path of the Grand River in downtown Lansing.

All events will converge around Michigan’s rich heritage of gratitude for our rivers, lakes, and aquatic life - and our equally rich tradition of creativity and self-expression. Country and ethnic musical acts will take place throughout the weekend. Other events will include:

·  Fly tying, fly fishing, rod building demo, casting

·  Educational activities & Wii gaming station

·  Watering Hole (beer tent!) & food vendors

·  Boat tours by Metro Marinas, Air boat rides by U.S. Fisheries & Wildlife Service and Capt. Travis Curry, water taxi

VISUALS: Hundreds of musicians, anglers, vendors, volunteers, and fans of country and multicultural music gathered along the path of the Grand River for a three-day celebration of Michigan’s rich heritage of gratitude for our rivers, lakes, and aquatic life - and our equally rich tradition of creativity and self-expression.

WHY: The Grand American Fish Rodeo is produced by the Michigan Institute for Contemporary Art (MICA), a 501(c)3 nonprofit that serves as a catalyst for community development through quality arts programming. MICA produces both the Lansing JazzFest and the Old Town BluesFest. MICA volunteers are deeply committed to the diversity and future of the Lansing region.
