Midland, July, 2014 – Associated Builders and Contractors Greater Michigan Chapter (ABC) today celebrated the U.S. House of Representatives passage of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), H.R. 803. WIOA passed the House on July 9 by a vote of 415-6, and is the first major overhaul of federal workforce training programs since 1998. The U.S. Senate passed the bill by a vote of 95-3 on June 25 and it now awaits President Obama’s signature.

“The Greater Michigan Chapter and its Members wish to thank the legislators that represent our Region like US House of Representatives Dave Camp, Tim Wahlberg, Dan Benishek, Dan Kildee, Candace Miller & Mike Rogers who on a bi-partisan basis collaborated to get this important bill passed”, said ABC/GMC President, Jimmy Greene.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the construction industry’s need for workers will grow twice as fast as the average for all industries and that the industry will face a workforce shortage of 1.6 million workers by 2022. WIOA will streamline and localize job training programs while ensuring that they are targeted toward available career opportunities. ABC believes that effective, targeted and accessible workforce training programs will be crucial in preparing new workers for careers in construction and has been a vocal supporter of WIOA.

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is a national association with 70 chapters representing 25,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms across the United States. The member businesses have joined together to advance the construction industry by supporting the philosophy of merit shop construction and the free enterprise system.
