The First Fashion/Design Incubator Opens in the State of Michigan

Lansing’s Runway Opens with Full Roster of Designers in Residence

LANSING, MI – The first fashion and design incubator in the State of Michigan, and one of only a few in the nation, will be unveiled October 9th.  The Runway, located in the historic downtown Knapp’s Centre, features 12 leasable private offices for designers-in-residence, as well as a communal design area equipped with state-of-the-art machinery. Designers-in-residence and associate designers are able to utilize the equipment as part of their tenancy. The Runway will feature a retail space featuring Michigan-based designer products.

The Lansing area has seen significant growth in the fashion and garment manufacturing industry over the last decade and this incubator will be a welcomed asset to the community by existing industry. Local support has come from Foster, Swift, Collins & Smith, P.C., Peckham, Inc., and Lake Trust Credit Union.

The Runway project was initiated in 2009 by the Lansing Economic Development Corporation (LEDC), the City of Lansing’s economic development arm. In 2012, the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) entered into a contract for economic development services with the Lansing Economic Development Corporation and now serves as the operational support of The Runway incubator.

The Lansing region has more business incubators in operation than any other city in the State with seven currently operating and two more under development.

“The Runway will drive innovation in the City of Lansing and the Knapp’s building is a perfect home for this unique development,” said Mayor Bernero. “We are a city of makers and manufacturers. The Runway will highlight the new economy thinking that is redefining our approach to economic development.”

“The Lansing area can support start-ups in vastly different industries with LEAP’s current Regional Innovation Network, umbrella support for all of our region’s incubators. From fashion to food to high tech, the region has aligned its resources into a streamlined approach, available for any and all who call Lansing home or are looking for a place to start that new business,” said Bob Trezise, President and CEO of LEAP.

A ribbon cutting and media event will take place during Lansing Maker Week, October 9th at 10:00 a.m.  For more information on The Runway, visit www.runwaylansing.com.
