Associated Builders and Contractors Greater Michigan Chapter Honors STEP Award Winners, Names 2014 Safety Leader of the Year.
Midland, Michigan, October 2014 –ABC/GMC is proud to announce its members that have won the 2014 Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Awards. STEP recognizes ABC member companies who consistently excel in the field of safety, but more importantly it provides an evaluation tool
to help identify areas to improve a company’s safety program. STEP was established in 1989, by the ABC National Environment Health & Safety Committee to assist ABC member contractors in evaluating and improving corporate safety practices and recognize outstanding safety training efforts.
Each year, over 2,000 contractors of various sizes participate in the STEP program. The following ABC Greater Michigan Chapter member companies have been recognized in the following categories:
G.E. Insulation Co.
Alloy Construction Service, Inc.
Blasy Electric, Inc.
Central Concrete Product
Fisher Contracting Co.
Valley Electrical Contractors
Three Rivers Corporation
Pyramid Control, Inc.
RCL Construction Co., Inc.
The Tancor Corporation
Answer Heating & Cooling, Inc.
Albin Hengesbach Carpentry & Custom Cabinets, Inc.
Lee Wood Contracting
The highest honor recognizing a safety program that demonstrates the highest commitment is the diamond-level. These companies must have an incident rate at least 50% below the National Bureau of Labor Statistics average in their particular NAICS code for the current year and each of the past two consecutive years and have an EMR (or “mod factor”) at or below 0.700 (0.800 for companies under 100 employees).
In addition to the STEP award presentation the 2014 ABC/GMC Safety Leader Award was presented. The recipient, Erick Forshee, Environmental Health & Safety Director at Fisher Companies was nominated by his peers for his efforts to curb workplace injuries over the past 15 years.
This is the first year in the companies’ history that all divisions were over 6 months OSHA recordable free. As of August, 7 of their 8 companies where OSHA Free – that’s over 300,000 man hours! Erick believes it’s because of the great leadership and Management Team’s support of and belief in the program.
However, as company owner, JW Fisher has stated - it is more than that. Their notable safety record is due to the policies and procedures within their Safety Program and the fact that their employees take safety home with them each and every day. Erick has helped them get to that point.
We congratulate all of the individuals and companies who were recognized for their outstanding leadership and safety practices that make our Chapter great!
