BWL Sends Line Crew to Help Restore Nearby Communities

Ice storm improvements help BWL customers get power back faster

The Lansing Board of Water & Light has sent a three-person line crew to help restoration efforts in nearby communities following strong winds that caused power outages last night. The line crew will be assigned restoration work in mid-Michigan, and can be recalled should the BWL require it.

“Since we were able to quickly restore power to our own customers, we’re happy to assist our neighboring communities following the storm,” said General Manager J. Peter Lark.

The BWL had extra line crews, tree crews and contracted standby crews ready to respond to outages. A total of 395 customers lost power Monday night – all of which were restored early Tuesday morning. One outage knocked out 71 customers when a falling tree limb brought down a power line.

“Since last December’s ice storm, the BWL has worked extremely hard in making communication and operational improvements that help customers get power back faster,” said Lark. “Our robust tree trimming standards and larger crews, along with the outage map and more ways for customers to report their outages, make us ready for any type of severe weather that hits our service territory.”

The BWL has a tradition of responding to mutual aid requests from other utilities to send crews for restoration efforts, including providing recent assistance to Traverse City and to the east coast following Hurricane Sandy.
