The Runway receives grant to develop cutting-edge design program

MEDC grants LEAP $65,000 to develop fashion curriculum

LANSING, MI – It was announced today that the Michigan Economic Development Corporation will provide $65,000 in grant funding to the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) in order to develop a strategic, sustainable curriculum to be integrated into the fashion-based startup businesses at The Runway.

The Runway is Michigan’s first and only fashion-based business incubator. It is located within the historic Knapp’s Centre in downtown Lansing. Curriculum development is critical to the success of The Runway and to this industry developing across the state. LEAP, which manages The Runway on behalf of the City of Lansing (Lansing Economic Development Corporation) through a contract for economic development services, will seek additional partnerships for design industry-specific services. Partners may include Lansing Community College, Michigan Fashion Proto, Michigan State University Fashion Program, the MSU Alumni Association, Detroit Garment Guild Group, Michigan Garment Industry Council, and other fashion organizations and professionals, both statewide and nationally.

“Lansing and the State of Michigan now have a powerful asset to attract and strengthen the ever-growing, and developing, fashion industry,” said Quin D. Stinchfield, Manager of Business Incubation for LEAP. “The Runway will cultivate this new economy industry and aid in creating an ecosystem that values creativity, something talent looks for when choosing a destination to live and work.”

“The Runway is already playing a key role in driving innovation and entrepreneurship in Lansing,” said Mayor Virg Bernero. “We’re grateful to the MEDC for recognizing the tremendous value in supporting our efforts to become a fashion and design hub in the heart of the Midwest.”

In addition to these new partnerships, one of The Runway’s key sponsors Foster, Swift, Collins, and Smith PC, will also be on site twice a week to provide legal services to members of the program. Also, as part of the curriculum, LEAP is developing a web-based business library, a monthly fashion-based speaker series, an international fashion exchange program and quarterly trainings on the equipment located within the design space and OptiTex software.

“The Lansing Economic Development Corporation Board is proud to once again be at the cutting edge of economic development strategies in our city. We thank the MEDC and LEAP for this impactful grant,” said Calvin Jones, Board Chairman of the Lansing Economic Development Corporation.

The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) is a coalition of area leaders committed to building a prosperous and vibrant region where business can thrive. To do this, we help entrepreneurs start new businesses, help existing businesses grow, and attract new businesses to the region. For more information about LEAP, please visit
