Capital City Comic Convention Coming to Greater Lansing

Event to be held May 2-3 at Haslett High School

HASLETT, Mich. – Inspired by the support of comic conventions throughout Michigan and driven to provide the local community with a similar opportunity, a covert group of like-minded Lansing professionals known as the Phantom Five have founded the Capital City Comic Con (C4).

“Opportunities to showcase our love of comics, games, movies, television and more have taken many of us to other cities,” said Malinda Barr and Dennis M. Louney co-founders of Capital City Comic Con. “We’re thrilled to bring fans in our community together right here in greater Lansing for such a cool event.”

The Capital City Comic Con will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3 at Haslett High School. The convention will sprawl the north end of the school, utilizing two gymnasiums, the 700 seat performing arts center, dressing rooms, expansive hallway and cafeteria space, and more.

Officials anticipate hosting between 2,000 - 3,000 attendees over the course of the weekend with space to accommodate more than 50 multi-media exhibitors, including vendors offering comic books, board and card games, action figures, merchandise, videos, apparel, and more.

In addition to exhibitors, the convention plans to incorporate special guest graphic artists and writers, costume and cosplay competitions with local celebrity judges, performance art, improvisational and interactive cosplay, panel discussions and other activities throughout the day.

Sponsors include Graff Chevrolet, Granger, Schuler Books and Music, Gearhead Brewing Company, Spartan Printing, local area cinemas and more.

“This will be a fantastic family-friendly event debuting on Free Comic Book Day and the opening weekend of the new Avengers movie,” said Louney.

Key highlights to see at C4 include:

  • Rick Chambers, Michigan novelist and screenwriter, as the feature guest, who will debut his new episode, “Mind Sifter” of the Star Trek New Voyages online Star Trek series,
  • The Michigan State University Library Comic Art Collection,
  • Dan Frazier, Lansing area collector with more than 13, 000 comics, silver age comics and artist prints,
  • Impressions Five Science Museum is sponsoring the Lego game area, providing more than 12,000 Legos for use during the event,
  • The 501st Star Wars Legion of Cosplay Fans,
  • The national award-winning Haslett Robotics team demonstrating real-life robots,
  • Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments licensed and sanctioned by Wizards of the Coast and Kanami,
  • And much more.

Barr, whose past event planning experience includes Lansing’s massive weeklong Common Ground Music Festival, says the founders are taking a conservative approach with event plans to ensure a seamless event.

“We’re aware of how much buzz this is generating, especially with our local vendors that are participating such as Everybody Reads, Just 4 Fun, Hollow Mountain Comics, Cards in the Corner, Fortress Games, Evolution Games and many others. It is an exciting responsibility we have to provide a platform for camaraderie of science fiction, comic and gaming businesses and their fans,” said Barr. “In our first year, we are intensely focused on making this fun and effortless for all attendees, exhibitors and guests.“

Capital City Comic Con is greater Lansing’s first comic convention, bringing fans from all walks of pop culture together for a weekend of fun for fans of all ages. The Phantom Five is comprised of Christina DeJong, James Curtis, Malinda Barr, Randy Chapel and Dennis M. Louney. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit,.
