“We are very excited to have World Refugee Awareness Week culminate with the Welcoming the Stranger: 5K Family Fun Run” shared race organizer Marissa Nalley, the Refugee Services Community Outreach Coordinator for STVCC.  “This run is about celebrating those hardworking, dedicated individuals who have escaped violence and persecution in their native countries in order to provide a better life for their families.”

Included in the race will be a large group of young runners from STVCC Children’s Home.  With the help of sponsor Playmaker’s Running Club, these kids have been preparing all year for this race and other races in the community.

World Refugee Awareness Week is the City of Lansing’s celebration of World Refugee Day.  This day was established by the United Nations to honor the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.  Every year, the UN recognizes June 20th as World Refugee Day and large cities across the globe create elaborate festivals and events to celebrate.  Join us June 15th -20th as Lansing celebrates the hundreds of refugees resettled in our community!
