The Eaton RESA Insurance & Risk Management program and students have already reaped many benefits with the partnership of Farm Bureau Insurance. For the past four years the program has been housed at the Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan Headquarters in Lansing. In addition, Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan furnished the program with a new state of the art classroom two years ago.

In this day and age and with school funding being an issue, districts have a hard enough time making sure students have all of the necessary supplies they need to be successful without the need of making sure each student has a laptop computer. With the continued support from Farm Bureau Insurance, students enrolled in the Eaton RESA Insurance & Risk Management program, not having a laptop will not be an issue. Farm Bureau Insurance made a donation of nearly $10,000 towards purchasing new laptops for the program.

For the Eaton RESA Insurance & Risk Management Program a laptop computer is a must. With the program being taught in coordination with Olivet College, the instructor, Lynda Neff, utilizes Blackboard on a daily basis just like she does with her college classes held on campus at Olivet. Blackboard is a web-based learning management system which provides a centralized focal point for the majority of homework assignments, quizzes, links to applicable videos, and on-line research.

The instructor assigns homework, and students attach their work to the system using a variety of mediums. Online standardized tests provide instant feedback while essays are easily completed, then reviewed and graded online. In addition, classroom materials such as PowerPoint, activities, and articles are added for students to review. In addition, it is a grading system that may be customized to the instructor’s preferred style.

Although Blackboard is intended to add important components to traditional face-to-face class time, it may also be used for announcements and emails, to either groups or selected individuals. Online chat and discussion rooms allow students to complete team assignments outside of the traditional class time. There is additional functionality; it just depends upon the willingness of the instructor and students to take it do the degree desired.

With the continued support of Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan, students will be leaving the program with the skills needed to fulfill the gaps created for an aging work force in the insurance industry.
