When snow blows and mounds grow at bus stops, CATA picks up/drops off at cleared driveways, sidewalks
(Lansing, Mich.) — What’s in store for mid-Michigan this winter? According to AccuWeather, National Weather Service and the Farmers’ Almanac, the forecast calls for a mild transition into December, accompanied by some rain, and followed later in the season by unseasonably mild temperatures with occasional shots of bitter cold. Still, CATA isn’t taking any chances.
“We are preparing for periods of heavy snow and frigid temperatures,” said Sandy Draggoo, CATA CEO/Executive Director. “We are notifying customers of three significant system-wide practices when snow accumulation presents challenges.
Serving riders beyond marked stops
When snow and ice accumulate around a bus stop and create safety concerns with respect to boarding and disembarking, customers should use the closest safe and cleared driveway or section of sidewalk along the route.
“We are temporarily casting aside our conventional practice of conducting boardings and drop-offs at bus stops only,” Draggoo said. “CATA operators will be on the lookout for passengers waving for them to stop along established or detoured routes at locations other than a bus stop. Customers still need a ride, so we are moving around obstacles.”
Consistent detour updates – every 2 hours
Once a route is on snow detour – which, for the safety of its passengers and drivers, can happen anytime as conditions warrant – CATA will provide updates every 2 hours via cata.org, Rider Alerts and social media, beginning as early as 6 a.m. and lasting until the detour or regular service ends for the day.

Customers are urged to subscribe to alerts regarding planned and unplanned detours that result from factors outside of CATA’s control. Get up-to-the-minute information about your route as it is detoured or returned to regular service. Sign up at cata.org for route-specific email and/or text alerts and advisories. “Construction, special events, snow, ice, accidents, chemical spills, evacuations, water-main breaks and gas leaks — these events can and do happen in our community,” Draggoo added. “They’re temporary disruptions, but helping our customers understand what to expect so that they can better plan their trips is a smart customer-focused approach that makes sense.”
