Event is First Among Many for Metro Lansing Neighborhoods
Presented by the Arts Council of Greater Lansing, in partnership with local commercial and business associations, Arts Night Out is a free event series that rotates through four different Lansing-area neighborhoods on a monthly basis and allows the public to experience urban space and creativity in unexpected ways. The event’s kickoff is being held in Old Town on May 6, 2016 from 5 – 8 p.m. and has more than 25 participating venues and lots of surprises in store.
The kickoff will feature artists and art happenings in each venue plus live printmaking with local artist Kimberly Lavon, buskers on the streets and a special concert, featuring the Desmond Jones Band to close out the night.
“Arts Night Out is in perfect alignment with our placemaking efforts and follows our mission to fuel economic development and build community with creativity as the driver,” says Deborah E. Mikula, Arts Council executive director. “We are really excited about partnering with area businesses and neighborhoods in a way that fosters creativity, brings the community together and creates a sense of place.”
Offering attendees the opportunity to view the arts and area neighborhoods with a fresh appreciation, these “new Friday nights” work to create a business-art fusion, where anything can happen—from art exhibits in bike shops and hair salons to live music in coffee houses and galleries—the sky is the limit.
“Arts Night Out puts creativity at the forefront of the typical night on the town,” says Mikula. “We chose Friday nights and the happy hour time slot for the events so that they would appeal to everyone, but specifically to the 20-30-something crowd, a sector we believe is often underserved in the arts community.”
The next Arts Night Out will take place in E. Lansing, Mich. on June 3, 2016. For a complete schedule and venue info, check out the pullout section of this week’s City Pulse or go to the Arts Night Out website at www.myartsnightout.com.
