Vanguard Public Affairs today announced the addition of veteran Michigan journalist and communications professional Jen Eyer as Vice President.

Well known in the media community, Eyer brings more than 15 years of journalism and communications experience to Vanguard, including serving as the opinion-editorial voice of the MLive chain of newspapers across Michigan for three consecutive years.

“Jen Eyer is well respected across Michigan as a media professional of the highest caliber and the skills she possesses as both a gifted writer and as an inventive strategic planner are second to none,” said TJ Bucholz, Vanguard President and Chief Executive Officer. “Her addition represents the next evolution for our company – we’re poised for great things in the months and years ahead.”

Jen has been working in digital news media since its inception in the 1990s. Since 2000, she has held a variety of leadership positions with MLive, and from 2010 to 2016 served as director of engagement — first for, then for MLive Media Group — overseeing the company’s editorial board, social media and reader engagement strategies.

Most recently she managed the newsroom for The Ann Arbor News, coaching reporters in producing hard-hitting local journalism optimized for multiple digital and social channels.

Jen was named best editorial writer in the top division in the state for 2014 by the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors, and is a nominee for the 2015 honor. She also has won awards for news column writing and for community engagement projects, including MLive's innovative "Ballot Bash" series, which opened up editorial board interviews for state candidates to the public, with events and webcasts.

Eyer’s addition represents another strong year of growth for Vanguard Public Affairs, as the company will celebrate its two-year anniversary on May 19.

Vanguard also is announcing the addition of two new staffers – Nicole Kreager joins Vanguard as Communications Manager, while Chelsea Coffey has been named Fundraising Manager.

Kreager, a 2016 graduate of Michigan State University in communications, brings experience in state government to Vanguard, having last served as a communications intern with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Kreager will report to Vanguard Vice President Andrew Heller.

Coffey, a 2016 graduate of Saginaw Valley State University with a double major in political science and economics, has a range of fundraising experiences, having worked for Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee and the Michigan House Democratic Caucus. Coffey will report to Vanguard Vice President Kristin Revere.

These additions cap two years of steady growth for Vanguard, which late last year announced a strategic partnership with 834 Design & Marketing, an award-winning integrated communications agency based in West Michigan.

“We’ve come a long way in two short years,” Bucholz said. “Our growth reflects the faith and trust placed in us and our work by our clients. I’m nearly overwhelmed by the support our firm has received broadly from our clients and employees alike.”

Vanguard is a full-service public affairs firm, specializing in strategic communications, fundraising, media relations, message development, public affairs, crisis communications, and public opinion research. It currently represents 16 clients in five states ranging from education, financial services, energy, law firms, consumer products, transportation, and campaigns and elections.
