Partnership Will Help Combat Hunger During School Summer Break

McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation collected more than 1,000 pounds of cereal in its first annual Cereal for Summer, a partnership with the Greater Lansing Food Bank.

Beginning with the celebration of the 15th Annual Jack Breslin Golf Classic on May 25th—a fundraising event to support areas of greatest need at McLaren Greater Lansing—McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation collected cereal from golfers and sponsors to help combat hunger in the community. Following Golf Classic, the Foundation collected cereal at McLaren Greater Lansing’s Greenlawn and Penn campuses, Mid-Michigan Physicians, Eagle Eye Golf Club and Hawk Hollow Golf Course.

The start of summer often marks the end of a guaranteed meal for a number of children in and around the Greater Lansing area. Cereal collected by the McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation’s Cereal for Summer will be distributed by the Greater Lansing Food Bank to families throughout the seven counties in the Mid-Michigan region.

“We want to thank all of our generous partners from each site who compassionately gave to help combat hunger in our community,” said Sarah Spradlin, CFRE, Foundation executive director.

The 1,000 pounds of cereal was delivered to the Food Bank on Thursday, June 16, for distribution. McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation hopes this will be an annual effort to serve the community.

“The Cereal for Summer food drive is so important to the families we serve,” said Joe Wald, executive director of Greater Lansing Food Bank. “Now that school is on summer recess, these cereal boxes will make sure our community’s children have full breakfast bowls every morning.”

Greater Lansing Food Bank sees an increase in food demand during the summer months when children lose access to school meals. “Thank you so much to McLaren Greater Lansing, Mid-Michigan Physicians, Eagle Eye Golf Club, Hawk Hollow Golf Course and everyone who was able to donate,” Wald said.
