Community invited to attend award ceremony August 15th

What began as a small violin lesson studio and repair shop called “String Connection” has grown into one of the largest private music lesson schools in the state of Michigan with over 300 weekly students now called the Okemos Music Academy. (www.LansingMusicLessons.com)

Because of this explosive growth, cutting edge teaching, and progressive music systems, John Dewey, owner and director of the academy, was given the prestigious award of “2016 Music Studio of the Year”, beating out 7 other music studio finalists from the United States and Canada. The award was presented by national business coach, Marty Fort at the Music Academy Success conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In celebration of this honor, Okemos Music Academy will be hosting an awards ceremony on August 15th at 1:00pm. Faculty, students, local officials and members of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce will be in attendance.

Since 2000, John Dewey has operated the Okemos Music Academy (formerly String Connection) on Hagadorn Road at Jolly in Okemos.

“We’re very excited and so proud to have brought this award home to Okemos and the Lansing area community,” Dewey said. “As a thank you to the community, we will be hosting a celebration that is open to the public on Saturday August, 20th where we will provide refreshments and door prizes.”

Mr. Dewey has a degree in violin performance and has been playing music professionally since the age of 14. Coming from a very musical family his passion for music runs deep. As a father of 5 and grandfather of 3, Dewey also has first-hand knowledge of how difficult it can be for parents and grandparents to come by a music program that can accommodate busy schedules while keeping students happy and learning. Dewey’s goal was to create an exceptional academy that brings music to the forefront of education and showcase how talented the students here truly are.

With lessons in piano, guitar, drums, voice, bass, ukulele, violin, viola, cello, flute clarinet and saxophone the Okemos Music Academy is preparing to unveil several new programs and performance opportunities for the fall. The announcement of a national award is an indication that things are just warming up at the Academy this summer.
