Lansing Lugnuts fans support the scholarship through in-park promotion
U.S. Army veteran Joshua Vaughn, of Charlotte, is the first to receive a $1,000 LAFCU Community Champions scholarship to attend Lansing Community College (LCC).
Vaughn was chosen based on a one-page essay identifying three reasons he was compelled to serve his country.
“Joshua’s amazing essay took us through a day of his service in Senjaray, Afghanistan,” said Kelli A. Ellsworth Etchison, LAFCU senior vice president of marketing. “We saw war and the reasons he chose to serve our country through his eyes. It was powerful and inspiring.”
Vaughn chose to leave college before completing a degree to enlist. The service legacy of his grandfather influenced Vaughn to serve his country and to select the U.S. Army, the same branch in which his grandfather served during World War II. The desire to be part of the military brotherhood was also a factor, as well as the military educational assistance for veterans. He plans to earn a master’s degree in business.
The $1,000 award comprises a donation by LAFCU and funds donated to the scholarship by Lansing Lugnuts fans who participate in LAFCU Launch, an in-park promotion. Following the game at each LAFCU Fireworks Spectacular, fans donate $1 for each tennis ball they “launch” onto the field to try to win a $25 VISA card.
The LAFCU Community Champions program also includes recognition of active and veteran members of the military at Lansing Lugnuts LAFCU Fireworks Spectaculars. Visit www.LAFCU.com or www.LansingLugnuts.com for more information.
