Associated Builders and Contractors Greater Michigan Chapter Honors Members at Awards Dinner

ABC Greater Michigan Chapter held its annual award presentation event on Thursday, September 7th at the H Hotel, downtown Midland. The chapter was proud to announce the member companies that won the 2017 Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Awards. STEP recognizes ABC member companies who consistently excel in the field of safety, but more importantly it provides an evaluation tool to help identify areas to improve a company’s safety program. 

The following ABC Greater Michigan Chapter member companies received awards in the following categories:

The highest honor recognizing a safety program that demonstrates the highest commitment is the diamond-level. These companies must have an incident rate at least 50% below the National Bureau of Labor Statistics average in their particular NAICS code for the current year and each of the past two consecutive years and have an EMR (or “mod factor”) at or below 0.700 (0.800 for companies under 100 employees).

The 2017 Excellence In Construction (EIC) awards were also presented at the evening’s event. A staple for chapters across the country, EIC recognizes the outstanding projects, craftsmanship and work that that member companies do. Projects were again this year submitted in a variety of categories. The following companies were awarded:

New Construction Under $1 Million

Wolgast Corporation – Project: Flint YMCA Yurts

New Construction Over $10 Million

Three Rivers Corporation – Project: MidMichigan Health Mt. Pleasant

Addition/Renovation Under $1 Million

Three Rivers Corporation – Project: Helping Hands Dental

New Construction $1-5 Million

Wolgast Corporation – Project: Forward Energy

Electrical

Consolidated Electrical Contractors – Project: The Outfields

The 2017 “Pete Crawford Memorial” Safety Leader of the Year award was presented to The Dow Chemical Company Vice President of Operations Canada and USA North and Site Director Michigan Operations, Rich Wells. Rich is a fitting recipient as he has championed the safety movement in the construction industry in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

The evening wrapped up with keynote speaker, James R. Fitterling, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Dow Chemical Company. As a member of Dow’s most senior leadership, Fitterling has played a key role in developing and executing Dow’s strategy to invest in a market-driven portfolio of advantaged and technology-enabled businesses that create value for shareholders and customers.
