Students with differing abilities strengthen bonds through Buddy Day

Mason High School students join Heartwood School students for this traditional fun, collaboration day

Last week, in partnership with Heartwood School, one Mason High School classroom participated in Buddy Day. Buddy Day is a program in which Mason High School students ‘buddy-up’ with Heartwood students to learn and interact within a friendly environment. Heartwood School, serves students in the Ingham ISD service area with moderate to severe cognitive impairments, severe multiple impairments and autism spectrum disorder.

Mason High School teacher, Andrew Chapin states, “Every time we combine our classrooms for Buddy Day, we see many amazing connections between our students and they learn so much from one another.” Mason High School students spend the day with Heartwood students to encourage social interaction with their peers as well as play games and participate in activities.

Jennifer Rogers, Heartwood School Principal, states, “Our students and staff look forward to these events every year. It’s such a great opportunity for our students to spend time with their peers.”


Buddy Day participants do arts and crafts

Andrew Chapin co-founded Buddy Day with the former Principal of Heartwood School in 2004. He said of the program, “The best part about Buddy Day is the Mason students think they are going to Heartwood to teach and help those students, but in reality, it is the Heartwood students who teach the Mason students some very valuable life lessons. We truly appreciate the Heartwood and Mason High School relationship that has blossomed from this tradition and will continue to take my students there as long as I teach.”
