Project exceeding $3.5 million breaks ground, completion expected December 2017

Moore Trosper Construction Company has been selected as the design-build contractor for a more than $3.5 million classroom addition at the Joseph K. Lumsden Bahweting Anishnabe School, Sault Ste. Marie.

The project broke ground in August and completion is expected December 2017.

The groundbreaking for the JKL Bahweting School addition was a team effort. Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Chairperson Aaron Payment, School Superintendent Theresa Kallstrom, Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Christian Provenzano and Moore Trosper President Ted Moore were joined by other government and tribal dignitaries as well as school personnel, their children and others.

The more than 17,000-square-foot building includes nine instructional classrooms, a multipurpose classroom, a culture and language room, bathrooms, and office and storage areas that support the gym. It is attached to the middle school gymnasium, and there will be a connecting hallway to the school’s main K-8 facility.

"Moore Trosper has done excellent work with all our previous projects – on time and on or below budget,” said Aaron A. Payment, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians chairperson. “This is a given for them. Additionally, they have been wonderful to the communities where they build, often contributing to local causes supporting literacy, culture and service benefits."

The tribe sponsors JKL Bahweting School as a Bureau of Indian Affairs school. The school is also a Michigan charter school; Northern Michigan University is the charter authorizing entity.

School Superintendent Theresa Kallstrom said, “JKL is extremely pleased that the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians is working with Moore Trosper Construction Company to create a 21st century learning environment for our students. This new addition will serve the cultural, social and academic needs of our students for decades to come!"

Moore Trosper President Ted Moore said, “We are honored to help JKL Bahweting School meet the growing needs of its more than 500 students. The design and construction of educational facilities is an area of expertise for Moore Trosper, having worked for more than 50 K-12 and higher education clients.”

JKL Bahweting School serves K-8 students and is located at 1301 Marquette Ave., Sault Ste. Marie. The U.S. Department of Education has recognized JKL Bahweting School as a National Title I Distinguished School for its positive educational advances.
