18 students enrolled at Olivet College take advantage of scholar program

Located just 30 miles outside of Lansing, Olivet College has forged a place in the Lansing School District (LSD) — through its partnership with the Lansing Promise Foundation (Lansing Promise) — as the first choice for students who want an immersive, private-school experience to graduate on time with minimal debt.

Olivet College was the first private school to join Lansing Promise, contributing alongside Lansing Community College (LCC) and Michigan State University (MSU). The welcoming college has 18 students taking advantage of the opportunity for a personalized college experience.

“We are committed to providing all students — no matter certain circumstances beyond their control — with the opportunity to pursue a higher education,” said Tim Johnston, Olivet College’s vice president for admissions and marketing.

Qualified students receive roughly $3,200 from the Lansing Promise each year, for the first two years of their education. Adding to the impact of the partnership, the college agreed to provide an additional $14,000 Olivet College-funded Lansing Promise Grant each academic year, to eligible students who are full-time and living on campus.

The Lansing Promise is available to eligible high school graduates within LSD boundaries. It provides aid for up to 65 credits at LCC, or the equivalent dollar amount toward tuition and fees at MSU or Olivet College. All Lansing Promise students are also eligible to transfer to Olivet and receive all Lansing Promise Grant benefits funded by Olivet dollars, including spring enrollment students.

“As a Lansing Promise institution, we have extended such opportunities to students who otherwise may not have been able to take their education to the next level,” said Johnston.

With a focus on providing outstanding academics, a supportive community with one-on-one capabilities and opportunities for athletics, clubs and community service, Olivet College students are promised a tremendous value for their investment.
