Local community and family members donate more than $12,000 to open the Jason Richards Day Room at the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan

Thursday, December 7, 2017 was marked as the ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the Jason Richards Day Room at the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan.

Richards, a former Northern Michigan McDonald’s Owner/Operator, passed in June of 2016 but his memory lives on, impacting the lives of many thanks to his friends and family. Richards had a deeply rooted passion in his work with McDonald’s Corporation by giving back to local communities and specifically serving families that have ill children receiving medical treatment in hospitals and clinics. In honor of his memory, Richards’ friends and family donated more than $12,000 to open a “Day Room” at the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan. The Day Room allows the Ronald McDonald House to serve families that need a place to rest during the day but might not need a traditional overnight room. However, the Day Room is equipped to serve as an extra overnight room if there is a waiting list.

“When a child requires hospitalized treatment, keeping their family nearby is necessary. Medical travel means that well-siblings and family support persons accompany the ill child. The Ronald McDonald House helps care for the child’s family, their support team. The Jason Richards Day Room is a unique resource that helps the House serve more families and helps us to serve them to the best of our ability. We are honored to open the Jason Richards Day Room all thanks to the help from his family and friends,” said Carolyn Hurst, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan.

The grand opening on December 7, 2017 was well attended by McDonald’s Owner/Operators from all over the state of Michigan, corporate partners and board members of the Ronald McDonald House and Richards’ friends and family, including his parents. Jason’s parents, Gary and Ethel Richards of Frankenmuth, MI, extended their heartfelt thank you to all those that supported the Day Room project and brought it to reality. “Jason would be so proud that his compassionate spirit continues to help children and families in need. He always had a soft spot in his heart for kids. As his now five year old nephew, Rex, has told us over time, “He was my funniest uncle and he loved me so much,” said Ethel Richards, Jason’s mother.

The Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan serves families from around the state and beyond who have a child in one of the local hospitals or clinics. It has served thousands of families by providing them a warm and caring home-away-from-home where they can have home cooked meals, a place for siblings to play and a comfortable space to sleep close to the hospital room where they spend countless hours with an ill child.
