A decade of individual and corporate philanthropy has supported 4,300 grieving children

Ele’s Place, a healing center for grieving families, is honored to recognize the far-reaching efforts of Jackson National Life Insurance Company® (Jackson®) and its associates. Since 2008, the company and its associates have donated more than $2,145,000 to aid grieving children and teens; these funds directly assisted nearly 4,300 children in Lansing.

“Jackson has called mid-Michigan home for nearly 60 years, and we are committed to investing in charitable initiatives that support strong families and increase economic opportunities for our associates and neighbors,” said James Sopha, president at Jackson National Life Insurance Company. “Ele’s Place plays a critical role in our community by helping children and families heal after the loss of a loved one. The impact of Ele’s Place extends beyond grief support to strengthen our entire community as youth and families recover and rebuild their lives. Over the last 10 years, our associates have shown us how much they care about Ele’s Place with their own generous contributions, and Jackson is proud to multiply those efforts with corporate donations and sponsorships.”

Typically, it costs Ele’s Place $500 per child, per year to help families that need additional support in the grieving process. Ele’s Place provides each service, program and resource completely free to families, thanks to the efforts of community residents, as well as organizations like Jackson.

“Ele’s Place’s programming and services come at no cost to children and teens, and donors like Jackson and its associates are what make that possible,” said Kate Powers, managing director at Ele’s Place Lansing. “We thank them for their amazing diligence and consistency in aiding the perpetual effort to give children hope.”

In addition to financial support, Jackson has hosted Ele’s Race, a 5K to support Ele’s Place, on its campus in Alaiedon township since 2006. Annually, the race attracts more than 1,000 runners, walkers and volunteers to support Ele’s Place. Since that time, the race has raised more than $1 million to help support Ele’s Place’s mission.

“Ele’s Race is a signature event for our organization and it wouldn’t be the same without Jackson’s support. Jackson associates serve on the planning committee and help for months leading up to the event. They run, walk, donate and volunteer; it’s an example of the type of corporate-nonprofit partnerships that benefit the entire community,” said Powers.

For 26 years, Ele’s Place has been devoted to easing the grieving process of children, teens and families in the greater-Lansing area. Over the past several years Ele’s Place expanded its mission to serve grieving kids and families in Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Flint. This expansion was possible due to the many faithful corporate and individual donors in Mid-Michigan, including Jackson, that have built a stable foundation for the nonprofit’s original location in Lansing.

“It’s rare for one organization to support a nonprofit in such a holistic way consistently year after year. In addition to the financial and volunteer support Jackson has provided over the years, they have also had multiple executives serve on our Board of Directors, providing strategic direction and guidance,” Powers said. “This kind of support has provided the underpinning our organization needed to expand and serve more children across Michigan over the past several years.”

About Ele’s Place

Ele's Place is a nonprofit, community-based organization dedicated to creating awareness of and support for grieving children and their families. Through peer support group programs, Ele's Place helps children to cope with the death of a parent, sibling or other loved ones.

Before coming to Ele’s Place, many grieving children feel alone and keep their feelings inside, not wanting to burden their parents or other family members. Often, friends don’t seem to understand if they haven’t had a similar experience. But each week at Ele’s Place, hundreds of grieving children find a warm and welcoming place to meet new friends who really understand how they feel and begin to heal after the death of a loved one.
