When a student of any age has a creative and entrepreneurial mind, they find unique ways to bring their ideas to life. In education, we create learning environments to foster that mindset and help students understand how to start and operate a small business. Creative Pulp is a program for students with disabilities offered through Eaton RESA, in partnership with our local districts, and has two components, paper making and creating greeting cards to sell to the public.

Students in our high school transition classes make the paper from scratch. There are several different steps in the paper making process. Each job is broken down into specific tasks and assigned to students based on their individual abilities. For many students this is the first job skill training they have received in school. Students learn about process, time management, teamwork and problem-solving, while seeing the finished results of their work.

Once the paper is made, another set of students focus on making the greeting cards. Different types, colors and sizes of paper are used to create unique greeting cards for all types of occasions, holidays and seasonal themes. Once the cards are assembled they are distributed to a few local businesses and sold to the general public. All the proceeds go back into the Creative Pulp program.

Creative Pulp provides the opportunity for students with disabilities to gain employability skills as they transition from school to post-school settings. As individuals, we all have strengths. Maximizing those strengths and reaching our full potential is an important part of preparing for the workforce and developing talent. Creative Pulp takes that one step further and teaches students the importance of a business environment and how to be entrepreneurial at the same time. With an entrepreneurial mindset, you can do just about anything. Find out more about Creative Pulp on our website at www.eatonresa.org.
