LANSING – Gongwer News Service, Michigan’s premier provider of state government news and information, has announced a new leadership team for its Lansing offices.

Zachary Gorchow, the long-time editor of Gongwer’s Michigan Report, has been named executive editor and publisher.

Alethia Kasben, also a long-time Gongwer leader, has been named managing editor of the Michigan Report.

Gorchow and Kasben started their new roles on January 2, 2020.

Gorchow will manage Gongwer’s Michigan operations and develop new services while still playing a role in the company’s news coverage and leading reporting on the governor’s office.

Mr. Gorchow first came to Gongwer in 1998 as a staff writer and covered the House until 2005. From 2005-09, he was a Detroit Free Press staff writer, and was part of the reporting team that won the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the text message scandal involving former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

An alumnus of Michigan State University, he was also a staff writer for the Redford Observer.

Kasben has been with Gongwer since 2013, serving in various roles. As managing editor, she will take the lead on story assignment, editing and placement. She also will have a key role in planning and executing the company’s news strategy.

Kasben will continue to cover the Michigan House of Representatives, which has been her regular reporting beat. She also will continue to cover the medical and recreational marijuana industries. In her time at Gongwer, she has broken several major stories: investigating sexual harassment at the Capitol and revealing that relatively few eligible to regain their driver’s licenses after the end of driver’s responsibility fees had applied, among many others.

A native of Detroit and Hazel Park, Kasben is a Michigan State University alumna.
