MSU Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) has received the 2020 Community Spark Award that recognizes banks and credit unions for making a difference in their communities by supporting small businesses.

MSUFCU launched its #MSUFCUEatsLocal giveaway in March to support local restaurants during the COVID-19 pandemic. To enter, participants submitted photos of meals from their favorite local restaurants on the Credit Union’s Facebook or Twitter pages. Between April 22 and May 13, a daily winner was awarded two $25 gift cards to local restaurants, one for themselves and one to pay it forward with. A second round of the giveaway took place between July 10 through July 31 with a focus on Black- and LGBTQIA+-owned and operated restaurants. Over the two rounds of this campaign, MSUFCU purchased a total of $4,200 in gift cards to local restaurants helping support 15 businesses.

As part of the Community Spark Award, the Credit Union was able to choose an organization to receive $250. The Credit Union chose Weekend Survival Kits, which mobilizes community volunteers to donate items and pack kits, providing food on the weekends for children in grades K-5 in Greater Lansing area schools.

“Our MSUFCU Eats Local Giveaway social media campaign allowed us to support local businesses and encourage people to pay kindness forward during this challenging time,” said Deidre Davis, MSUFCU Chief Marketing Officer. “We are honored by this recognition, and the fact that Weekend Survival Kits will receive $250 to help local children makes the recognition even more impactful and appreciated.”

Financial organizations submitted 2020 projects they initiated that “sparked” local community support to award sponsor Social Assurance, based in Lincoln, Neb. Social Assurance manages banks’ and credit unions’ online marketing efforts, content, community relations, employee engagement, and social selling.
