Entrepreneurial Climate Change = A Bright Future for the Lansing region

Michigan’s entrepreneurial climate goes from 41st to 6th in Nation

LANSING, MI – Last week, MiQuest announced Michigan’s meteoric rise for its entrepreneurial climate, according to the Michigan Entrepreneurship Score Card. The ranking measures date like startup business survival, state tax structure, university research spending, and quality of life while considering the national rankings. In 2013, the State of Michigan had 103 active venture firms, which is up 66% over the last five years.

The Lansing region has played a prominent role in Michigan’s rise in entrepreneurial rankings. Startup activity has increased in large part due to the partnerships that have been put in place structurally between the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), LEAP, Michigan State University, Spartan Innovations, the Small Business Development Center, and other critical partners.

“Our region has seven business incubators currently in operation or opening this year. We just completed our Youth Entrepreneurship Showcase, where over 50 middle and high school students presented their startup businesses for prizes totaling $10,000. We host a monthly pitch competition and continue to fill the docket with new and innovative ideas, and LEAP, Spartan Innovations, the SBDC, all have been adding new startup clients to our rosters every day,” said LEAP’s Director of New Economy, Jeff Smith.

LEAP operates the Lansing Regional SmartZone and manages the Runway fashion incubator on behalf of the Lansing Economic Development Corporation through a contract for services with the City of Lansing. In summer 2014, LEAP will enter into an agreement to operate the Technology Innovation Center through the Lansing Regional SmartZone.

“We deeply appreciate the MEDC’s and Michigan State University’s leadership as LEAP leads the Lansing region into an age of entrepreneurial transformation – creating ideas, jobs and investment in our community,” said Bob Trezise, President and CEO of LEAP. “Michigan and the Lansing region have a tremendous and new global success story to tell, when it comes to creating an environment of innovation and business startups.”

The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) is a coalition of area leaders committed to building a prosperous and vibrant region where business can thrive. To do this, we help entrepreneurs start new businesses, help existing businesses grow, and attract new businesses to the region.
