Gillespie Group changes the face of Michigan Avenue

PNC’s grand opening & Altu’s new look sparks community excitement

East Lansing, Mich. --  PNC Bank opened a new branch in Lansing this week, joining Altu’s Ethiopian Cuisine and Gillespie Group in re-energizing Michigan Avenue.

Since 1997, Altu’s Ethiopian Cuisine has been a trademark of East Lansing international dining. Providing a different experience with non-traditional dining, Altu’s Ethiopian Cuisine is unlike other restaurants in the area.

With a unique setting on the inside, Gillespie Group wanted to make that energy visible with a distinctive outside to match.

“Our customers are loving the new look and so am I,” said Altaye Tadesse, owner of Altu’s Ethiopian Cuisine. “We have been here for almost 18 years and never have had any work done to it. It used to be what people considered the ‘old’ part of town. Now, it is a place to be.”

The remodeling of Altus is just the beginning of revitalization along Michigan Avenue with exciting new projects such as Midtown, which features a new PNC branch.

“PNC is focused on delivering what our customers want – when, where and how they choose,” said Jim Paul, PNC retail market manager.  “The Midtown 1,600-square-foot branch offers full-service capabilities, including drive-through services, a full-function ATM and a team of financial experts trained to help clients achieve their financial goals.”

Midtown is under construction and sits adjacent to Altu’s Ethiopian Cuisine. Bringing young professionals as well as a mix of undergraduate, graduate and international students together, Midtown is already creating a new style of community in East Lansing.

“We want customers of Altu’s Ethiopian Cuisine to feel that they are getting a unique experience before ever stepping inside,” said Pat Gillespie, CEO of Gillespie Group. “Focusing on distinct colors, innovative design and new signage, we hope that our remodel can bring more business to the area and brighten up the face of Michigan Avenue. With so much happening in downtown Lansing and East Lansing, we want that intensity to move along all of Michigan Avenue, not just at its end points.”

With the residents of Midtown and traffic from PNC’s customers, Michigan Avenue is transforming from a bridge between two downtowns.

Altu’s Ethiopian Cuisine is open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. PNC Bank is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Construction started on the plaza in March 2014 and was completed in early July.

Midtown opens two of its floors Aug. 15 while the fourth floor is scheduled for a fall 2014 opening.
