LAFCU opens nominations for military salutes at Lugnuts games

Active, veteran military members to be honored

LANSING, Mich. — LAFCU’s Community Champions program is now accepting public nominations for active and veteran members of the military to be honored at Lansing Lugnuts games this summer.

“This is the second year that we’ve used the opportunity of our Fireworks Spectaculars to shine the spotlight on individuals who have selflessly sacrificed for our great country,” said Kelli A. Ellsworth Etchison, LAFCU’s vice president of community and business development. “Cooley Law School Stadium is the perfect venue for this type of community tribute. It is amazing how quiet a crowd of more than 7,000 fans can get when an announcer reads the heroic, and sometimes poignant, story behind the nomination of that night’s honoree.”

The Lugnuts will host 18 LAFCU Fireworks Spectaculars during the 2015 season. One honoree will be recognized at each of these games beginning Friday, May 1. Each honoree will receive four tickets to the game, the opportunity to throw a ceremonial first pitch and a video-board salute during the game.

“The reactions and interactions of the crowds with the honorees and their guests last year exceeded our expectations,” said Nick Grueser, Lugnuts general manager. “We are proud to stand with our fans and salute those who have done so much for our nation.”

Honoree selections will be made throughout the summer. Deadlines for the individual events begin April 24 for the May 1 LAFCU Fireworks Spectacular. Aug. 28 is the deadline for the last event, which is Sept. 4.

To nominate a deserving community champion, write a paragraph about why the nominee should receive this recognition. Be sure to include military awards or recognitions earned by the nominee and any community involvement. Also identify the nominee’s branch of service and current rank or rank at time of discharge.

Nominations can be submitted via email,, or mailed to LAFCU Community Champions, P.O. Box 26188, Lansing, MI 48909.
