Chamber Announces Recipients of Community Service, Outstanding Small Business and Legacy Awards

Recipients to be Honored at 106th Annual Dinner on February 27

The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) has announced the recipients of three major annual awards, which will be presented at the Chamber’s upcoming Annual Dinner, on Tuesday, February 27. The 2018 award recipients include:

  • Jim Robinson, Community Service Award
  •  Byrum Builders, Outstanding Small Business Award
  • Greater Lansing Association of Realtors®, Legacy Award

Jim Robinson’s career with Farm Bureau Insurance has spanned 42 years. He has been chief executive officer since 2004. In 2015, 2016, and 2017, the Detroit Free Press recognized Farm Bureau Insurance as one of the top 100 places to work in Michigan. Robinson will retire from Farm Bureau Insurance in June 2018. During his tenure, Jim stressed to all Farm Bureau employees the importance of being involved in the community. Among his community service contributions:

  • Chair of the Mid-Michigan Travel Coalition Board of Directors;
  • Chairman and Member of the Ele’s Place Lansing Community Board of Directors;
  • Member of the Sparrow Foundation Board of Directors;
  • Member of the Roy Westran Scholarship Foundation;
  • Member of the executive committee for the Lansing Economic Area Partnership;
  • Member of the Insuring My Future Board; and
  • Former member of the Wharton Center Advisory Board.

“I am honored and deeply appreciative to receive the Community Service award from the Lansing Regional Chamber,” said Robinson. “I have always considered community service not as something for which we should receive any recognition, but rather a responsibility we all have to give back to a great community. In many respects, I feel like I have received more than I have contributed and for that consider myself to be most fortunate.”


For Jim Byrum, the process of building a great business started at a very early age. Byrum started working in the family hardware store at age four. Byrum was helping to manage the stores during his teen years. Byrum acquired a builder’s license and formed an LLC for his building company, but continued his job at General Motors until 2012, when he took Byrum Builders full -time. Today, his company has 16 employees and a long list of customers that sing his praises.

My goal from the first day was to build exactly what the customers wanted at the highest quality that was practical,” said Byrum. “I wanted to always do the work right and be totally honest and forthright with all my customers.


Byrum has demonstrated a commitment to the community in many ways, including serving as President of the Home Builders Association of Greater Lansing. He is a major contributor to Habitat for Humanity and St. Vincent Catholic Charities and serves on the board of Radmoor Montessori School.


The Greater Lansing Association of REALTORS® (GLAR) has been named the recipient of the Chamber Legacy award, recognizing the organization for its 67 years of membership in the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. GLAR joined the Chamber in 1951.


“The Association is honored to have such a strong relationship with the Chamber,” said Meghan Webber, Greater Lansing Association of REALTORS® CEO. “We have successfully worked together on advocacy over the past year and look forward to continuing to make an impact on the Lansing region.”


More than a century ago, 14 local firms concerned with promoting the interests of real estate organized the first real estate board in this area. The purpose of the organization was to encourage more efficient cooperation between real estate brokers; to protect the interest of brokers, Owners, and Purchasers of real estate; and to improve the condition of the real estate profession by cultivating a high standard of ethics in all transactions. In short, they hoped to improve a profession that had, until that time, been unregulated by state government or by a private membership association.


Since that time, GLAR has been helping promote the dream of home ownership through its network of licensed professionals who serve in the real estate industry.
