Working in Their Favor: Talent Development with Maner Costerisan

While two tax department interns are discussing the ins and outs of property taxes and preparing 1040s, a member of their cohort in the accounting and outsourced solutions department joins her mentor for lunch on the delicate accuracy of bank reconciliations and account payables. Meanwhile, others in the audit department fill most of their day with the engagement team at physical client locations.

Those a part of the accounting industry will be the first ones to tell you that there’s little time to waste in the “real world,” which is why at Maner Costerisan, the largest locally-owned firm of certified public accountants (CPA) in mid-Michigan, interns are not brought on to research minute details or prepare a cup of coffee for guests.

In building the next generation of public accountants, Maner Costerisan brings interns on board with the intent of hiring them full-time upon graduation, as well as enabling the pursuit of CPA licensing. These young professionals operate across assigned departments to develop abilities in accountability, client relationships, and technical and financial expertise.

A presentation is held throughout orientation week, which encourages interns to make their careers their own. They also have the opportunity to connect with partners and others who have walked similar paths. At the end of the program, interns receive feedback from supervisors, mentors and other individuals that were a part of their overall experience. In between the start and finish line, interns dive into a hands-on learning experience with the support and guidance of a professional team as well as each other.

Interns stay busy with a full-time track record to show for it — eventually converging to bounce around ideas and perspectives — but in the process they all are exposed to paths that create a paramount foundation for successful accountants today.
