As evidence by this month's cover story in FOCUS, our region has all of the ingredients for a best-selling story. Our outstanding quality of life, economic growth and investment, and the general positive direction we are headed has gained national recognition over the past several years. The chapters of our story detail an impressive list of accolades for our community.

There aren’t many communities in the nation that can match Greater Lansing’s impressive rankings in affordability, livability, education, housing, and the number of businesses that have built cultures so impressive they are considered among the finest places to work in the state and nation.

Looking back over the past decade, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Lansing region is now receiving what one could argue is long overdue attention. For example, since the Chamber’s Celebration of Regional Growth awards were created in 2006, 65 organizations have invested more than $2.3 billion in the region have been recognized for their commitment to the community. Our downtown region in the urban core of Lansing is flourishing. The City of East Lansing is moving forward with impressive developments in its downtown area. Growth and investment is occurring throughout the tri-county region from Eaton Rapids and Charlotte to St. Johns, Williamston and Mason.

In recent months, McLaren Greater Lansing and the Lansing Board of Water and Light have announced new investments totaling a combined $1 billion for a new hospital complex on Lansing’s southside and a utility plant on the west side of the metro area. Developers including Pat Gillespie have new projects ready to launch that will create additional jobs and expand the tax base.

If there is one area in which Lansing might be able to use a boost, it would be our understandable tendency to take what we have for granted. Our own self-image is not as positive as it should be considering where we are as a region. In other words, the Lansing region needs to do a better job of being #LoveLansing champions.

As I travel to other regions, some of which don’t have nearly as much to offer as Lansing, it seems as if people there possess a bit more ‘swagger’ than we do in Lansing. We need more of that swagger and pride in our region. We need to be more vocal about celebrating the reasons why our community is such a great place to live, work and thrive.

I would like to issue a challenge for all of us, including myself. Let’s make a commitment to live every day as brand ambassadors for Greater Lansing. Think about how you can share our success with others who live here and to those outside of our community. The facts are pretty clear – we live in one of the best region’s in the country. Let’s get out there and tell our story!
