New Global Business Opportunities

The entrepreneurial spirit is the motivating force behind successful business leaders who continually watch for new opportunities to expand markets for their products. What widespread problems need to be addressed? What new partnerships are being formed to accelerate progress in mitigating challenges of global significance? How can Michigan businesses become better informed about opportunities to participate?

The World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) is an international partnership formed in 2014 to develop a practical system for businesses around the world to become part of a global network committed to cooperating with the United Nations in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approved by the UN General Assembly in 2014.

A 2018 report describing the function and potential impact of the WBA makes these predictions:

“The SDGs provide one of the most ambitious, yet achievable agendas the world has ever set, with the aim to ‘leave no one behind’ in their realization. While the people and the planet are at the heart of this agenda, the SDGs also represent an enormous opportunity for business. Delivering these goals could create 380 million jobs by 2030 and stimulate $12 trillion of annual economic opportunities in just four sectors of the economy, according to a recent report by the Business and Sustainable Development Commission. The total economic gain could be 2-3 times larger when considering the benefits across the economy as a whole.”

The WBA is convening consultations and conferences in countries around the world to refine the details of implementation. Areas of particular interest to mid-Michigan businesses include food production, health related services, clean water and sanitation, affordable clean energy, and industrial innovation and infrastructure. The Greater Lansing United Nations Association will make a concerted effort to keep members of LRCC informed of specific sectors and opportunities as more details become available.
