Lansing Regional Chamber and UAW Support East Lansing City Council Candidates in Upcoming Election

Lansing, Mich. After working collaboratively this past summer, the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) and UAW Region 1-C are joining forces once again to announce support for candidates in the East Lansing City Council elections. Endorsed candidates by the two organizations are Ruth Beier, Kathleen Boyle, and Benjamin Eysselinck.

"The candidates we have endorsed possess a combination of leadership, business experience and community commitment that will help foster a more positive direction for the City of East Lansing,” said Kristin Beltzer, senior vice president for governmental relations and public affairs.

"We are happy to partner again with the LRCC in endorsing candidates that will serve the area’s needs,” said Art Luna, CAP coordinator for UAW Region 1-C. "We look forward to working together to create jobs and economic investment in the future.”

Ruth Beier serves on the East Lansing Downtown Development Authority and recently completed the East Lansing Emerging Leaders program. Beier is an economist for the Michigan Education Association and previously served as the deputy treasurer for the State of Michigan. She believes that East Lansing needs city council members with rich education and professional backgrounds to move the city toward becoming a place people want to live and work. If elected, Ruth will establish a protocol for real public input on developmental issues affecting local neighborhoods and improving the condition of rentals. She will work to develop a long term plan to provide affordable and appropriate housing for students near campus while encouraging the conversion of non-conforming rentals into single family housing.

Kathleen Boyle was appointed in 2012 to fill a vacancy on the East Lansing City Council and has served on the board of her neighborhood association as well as the East Lansing Housing Commission. Boyle is a lawyer at White, Schneider, Young & Chiodini P.C. in Okemos. She has lived in East Lansing for nearly 30 years and is working to ensure thoughtful development in the downtown area as well as to sustain the diverse neighborhoods she believes make East Lansing a great place to live and visit. If chosen to continue her term, Kathleen will support thoughtful and economically viable development downtown and improve walkable neighborhoods in and surrounding commercial areas.

Benjamin Eysselincki is the president of the Glencairn Neighborhood Association and a vice-chair of the East Lansing Historic District Commission. In the past, he has served as the chair of the East Lansing Crystal Awards Selection Committee and the East Lansing Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee. He is currently an implementation project manager at Sircon in East Lansing and previously served as a technical consultant at Artemis Solutions.

The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is one of the largest and most diverse unions in North America, with members in virtually every sector of the economy. The UAW has more than 390,000 active members and more than 600,000 retired members in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. UAW Region 1-C covers 11 counties in south-central Michigan including the cities of Flint, Lansing and Jackson.

The mission of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) is to be the preeminent business advocacy organization in the Greater Lansing region by collaborating for economic growth, creating new opportunities for our members and upholding pro-business ideals through the advancement of sound public policy.
