Region’s Best Young Professionals Recognized at 10 Over the Next Ten Awards

The Greater Lansing region’s top young professionals who are expected to contribute significantly to our community over the next ten years will be recognized at the 10 Over the Next Ten awards held September 24 at the University Club of Michigan State University. The seventh annual event was co-hosted by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) and Grand River Connection.

Following are the recipients of the 2013 10 Over the Next Ten awards:

Josh Hovey is a nationally accredited public relations counselor (APR) and vice president of Truscott Rossman, a Michigan-based public relations firm. He specializes in media relations, social media management, strategic communications planning, community relations and corporate social responsibility for a variety of clients. In his spare time, Josh dedicates his time to improving the Greater Lansing community.

Peter Spadafore works as legislative director for Acuitas, LLC, an advocacy firm based in downtown Lansing, where he focuses on appropriations and policy analysis on a wide range of issues. Spadafore was elected to the Lansing School District Board of Education in 2011. He is a graduate of James Madison College at Michigan State University where he studied social relations and policy with an emphasis on education policy and homeland security.

Brian Gallagher is an attorney at the Fraser Trebilcock law firm specializing in employee benefits. He also serves as chairman of the Board of Directors of Highfields, a social services nonprofit which provides services to thousands of local children and families. In addition, he serves as vice president and chair of networking programs for Grand River Connection.

Nicole Szymczak has been the communications and marketing director for Lansing Community College since December of 2011. Under her leadership, the college and the department have received dozens of ADDY Awards for its work on campaigns. Nicole currently oversees all marketing and social media development for one of the largest higher education institutions in the state.

Andrea Kerbuski is the chief communications officer for Capital Area Michigan Works!, and a lifestyle photographer and personal style blogger for Blonde Bedhead, a nationally recognized blog with more than 64,000 views per month. In her spare time, Andrea is involved with Grand River Connection, Mid-Michigan Creative Alliance, Central Michigan Public Relations Society of America and the Michigan FFA Alumni Council.

Nikali Luke is the president and co-owner of Simplified Accounting & Tax Service PC where he specializes in individual and corporation income tax preparation. Outside of the workplace Nikali believes in supporting his community by sponsoring the Old Town JazzFest & BluesFest, participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's, and volunteering his time through speaking engagements for the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs and many others.

Emily Caswell serves as the publications director at M3 Group. Emily’s communication skills have strengthened the full-service branding agency, as well as Capital Area Women’s LifeStyle Magazine and the Greater Lansing Business Monthly, since she joined the team in 2010. Overseeing the growing publication department at M3 Group, Emily strives for excellence when it comes to the written word.

Andrea Ragan is the executive director of the Capital Area IT Council, responsible for providing resources to IT employers in the Greater Lansing area such as networking capabilities, an understanding of industry trends and initiatives, and access to a talented workforce. Andrea previously served as the talent retention & district development director for the Lansing Economic Development Corporation and Marketing Manager for Downtown Lansing, Inc.

Timothy Schmitt is a community development analyst for the City of East Lansing. He graduated from Ohio University with a BS in Geography and Ohio State University with a Master’s in City and Regional Planning. He co-founded a non-profit, The Capital Collective, aimed at putting on cool events to show off the regions hidden gems.

Joseph Lee Yang works as the director of operations for the Boys & Girls Club of Lansing. He graduated from Lansing Everett High School, received his undergrad from Michigan State University, and recently completed his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Joseph Lee Yang is a first generation Hmong-American, born and raised in Lansing, Michigan.

The winners of the 10 Over the Next Ten awards were judged based on their professional achievement, community involvement and personal success. Applicants were required to be 35-years-old or younger, professionally centered in the tri-county area (Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton) and with a minimum of two years working in the Mid-Michigan Community.
