ITEC welcomes Michael K. Brown to board of directors, adds to Lansing staff

Information Technology Empowerment Center welcomes Michael K. Brown to board of directors, adds to Lansing staff

LANSING, MI - The Information Technology Empowerment Center today announced the return of prominent regional leader Michael K. Brown to its board of directors, and the hiring of additional staff in its Lansing office.

Brown, president of the Prima Civitas Foundation in East Lansing, returned to ITEC’s board of directors in January.

"I am pleased to rejoin the ITEC Board,” Brown said. "ITEC is a vital program that is providing young people and our schools the opportunity to advance STEM education in the Lansing area.”

Brown left the ITEC board and his position at PCF two years ago to accept an appointment by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder to serve as emergency manager for the city of Flint. A Flint native, Brown was appointed interim mayor of the city in 2009 and has held a number of leadership positions in government and the non-profit community in his 35-year career in public service.

Brown replaced former Lansing Mayor Dave Hollister - also a member of ITEC’s board of directors - as president of PCF in February of 2011.

"We are thrilled to welcome Mike Brown back to the ITEC board,” said ITEC Executive Director Kirk Riley. "His vast experience and lifelong commitment to building stronger communities will be invaluable in our efforts to boost STEM education in Lansing. Mike's longstanding connections in Flint will help ITEC's operation grow in that community, as well.”

ITEC also announced the addition of Alexandera Jones to the ITEC staff in Lansing. Jones brings extensive experience in bookkeeping and office management. As ITEC’s administrative assistant, she will manage day-to-day office activities and assist with the standardization, organization and growth of the iMath program as a program coordinator.

"ITEC first appealed to me because of its work with children to better their math skills,” said Jones. "Working for universities, I’ve seen the shortfalls of incoming students in STEM education. I am very excited to work for this organization because it provides an opportunity to influence youth in these areas and better prepare them for their futures.”

Previously Jones worked as a financial aid officer and work study coordinator for Baker College, both in Owosso and Cadillac. Jones has served in a number of bookkeeping and office administration positions in Michigan and Colorado. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in servicemanagement with a minor in accounting from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and an Associate of Business in Small Business Management/Entrepreneurship from Baker College. She is currently is persuing an MBA in human resources management at the Baker College Center for Graduate Studies.

ITEC is a nonprofit, collaborative partnership of community, education, business, and government working with students and families in the Capital Region to build excitement for coursework and careers in science, technology, engineering and math. ITEC’s vision is to enable Lansing area residents to acquire flexible, transferable technological skills that will allow them to participate in a fast-paced global economy.
