Michigan Lodging & Tourism Association honors Pure Michigan’s George Zimmerman

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan’s tourism industry and the Michigan Lodging & Tourism Association (MLTA) recognized Travel Michigan’s George Zimmerman for his outstanding achievements March 11 at the annual Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference on Tourism.

Zimmerman recently announced his retirement as vice president of Travel Michigan effective April 25. He received the Outstanding Achievement in Michigan Tourism award for his efforts over the past 13 years to promote, protect and grow Michigan tourism for the benefit of all industry segments and the state’s economy.

“During his tenure, George served as a pioneer for one of the greatest tourism promotion campaigns ever,” said Steve Yencich, MLTA president and CEO. “Pure Michigan has done more to grow jobs and tax revenues than any other campaign in Michigan history. That award-winning campaign is George’s legacy.
“It’s important that his replacement have the leadership qualities and stature to take us from where we are to where a united industry aspires to be.”

The Pure Michigan campaign launched in 2006, airing in three advertising regions outside of Michigan. By 2009 the campaign was airing nationally and was recognized as one the Top 10 Tourism Campaign on record by Forbes magazine. In 2012, Pure Michigan attracted 3.8 million out-of-state visitors who spent $1.1 billion at Michigan businesses.

In 2012, Zimmerman was named one of the Top 25 Extraordinary Minds in Hospitality Sales and Marketing by the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International. He was named State Tourism Director of the Year by his peers, the National Council of State Tourism Directors, in 2011.

The Michigan Lodging and Tourism Association represents hundreds of hotels, motels, resorts, and bed
and breakfasts that comprise more than 50,000 guest rooms throughout Michigan. MLTA is the only
statewide trade association advocating for the state’s lodging and tourism industries.
