March Hatching Winner Trains your Brain

Book Brainer combines mobile application with quizzing software

EAST LANSING, MI – Last night at the March Hatching event, BookBrainer, a new mobile application took home the monthly prize. BookBrainer, which was created after a recent Lansing Startup Weekend event and led by Jody Burgess, is a mobile application that continuously quizzes users as they read a book or manual to encourage comprehension.

Beginning June 2013, The Hatching pitch competition has awarded $1,000 each month to a brand new startup business idea. To receive funding, startup companies must create an LLC and be ready to start their businesses in the Lansing area. Each of the monthly winners will earn the opportunity to pitch again at The Hatching finale event held in December, for the chance to win $10,000 to cover business expenses.

A partnership between the LEAP, NEO Center, and Spartan Innovations, The Hatching allows entrepreneurs to pitch new ideas to judges and an audience of innovators in a spirited atmosphere. The winner receives $1,000 for startup costs as well as legal services to create the new business entity provided by Loomis, Ewert, Parsley, Davis & Gotting P.C.  Additionally, this month’s prize sponsorship came from Lansing Startup Weekend.

“We are very happy to see a range of ideas coming to table each month,” said Tony Willis, Manager of Business Acceleration for LEAP. “This month’s idea was a very clever app, based around improving reading and comprehension skills of the reader. Authors and publishing companies may find this idea very intriguing.”

“This event has a proven track record of producing sustainable and viable businesses. We know that we are meeting these innovators where they are and helping guide them through the process easily,” said Bob Trezise, President and CEO of LEAP.

People interested in participating and pitching in the upcoming events are asked to submit their ideas to  The next Hatching event will take place on April 30, 2014 at Beggar’s Banquet in East Lansing and will continue every last Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
