John Truscott named 2014 PACE Maker of the Year for excellence in public relations

Truscott Rossman also honored with two Pinnacle Awards and the People Choice Award by the Central Michigan Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America

LANSING – Truscott Rossman President John Truscott Thursday was named PACE Maker of the Year by the Central Michigan Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (CMPRSA), in recognition of his significant contribution to the profession.

Truscott was honored at CMPRSA’s annual awards ceremony, where his firm also won top honors for two public relations campaigns.

“John has always exhibited the highest public relations standards and ethics, and I am proud to be his business partner,” said Truscott Rossman CEO Kelly Rossman-McKinney, who was PACE Maker of the Year in 1992.

In 2001 Truscott founded his own public relations firm, The John Truscott Group, after serving as press secretary and communications director to Gov. John Engler for more than a decade. In 2011, his firm merged with The Rossman Group to become Truscott Rossman. Truscott provides communications strategy and message development for clients, while helping guide expansion of the firm, which now includes full-time offices in Grand Rapids and Detroit, as well as Lansing.

“The fact that Truscott Rossman is also being honored with two Pinnacle Awards this year speaks to John’s leadership role in making our staff the best of the best,” Rossman-McKinney said.

The PACE Awards are mid-Michigan's highest public relations honor and are awarded annually to professionals who, in the judgment of their (out-of-state) peers, have exhibited skill, creativity and resourcefulness on behalf of their clients. The Pinnacle Awards recognize the best among those winners.

Truscott Rossman was honored with a Pinnacle Award in the Shoestring Budget category for its pro bono work for the World Dwarf Games, the largest sporting event held exclusively for athletes with dwarfism, held at Michigan State University last summer. The firm, utilizing mainly interns to develop and execute a communications campaign, helped the annual global event gain record attendance, capacity crowds and national media attention.  The World Dwarf Games campaign was also voted as the People’s Choice Award winner by PACE Award event attendees.

Truscott Rossman also won a Pinnacle Award in the Community Relations Campaign category for its work with local housing company DTN Management to create a broad community conversation about the redevelopment of the East Lansing Park District. Working with news media and hosting a series of community design meetings, Truscott Rossman garnered significant community engagement on how to best redesign and redevelop a vacant key block of downtown East Lansing.

Over the past year, Truscott has been instrumental in guiding communications strategy for clients and issues ranging from the auto no-fault insurance debate and Personal Property Tax reform in the Michigan Capitol, to working with the Detroit Medical Center and the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce.

Under Truscott’s leadership, the Truscott Rossman team helped the Coalition Protecting Auto No-Fault launch a successful public relations campaign to educate policymakers about how proposed changes to Michigan’s auto insurance system would adversely impact Michigan taxpayers, accident survivors and health care providers.

With offices in Grand Rapids, Lansing and Detroit, Truscott Rossman represents local, statewide, national and international clients. The firm offers a full range of communications services, including issues management, crisis communication, community relations, media relations, digital media, government affairs, ballot initiatives and grassroots initiatives. Truscott Rossman also publishes the “Michigan Legislators’ Guide to Lobbyists & Media,” the Who’s Who for policymakers across the state.
