Douglas J Aveda Institute Sends Nine Beacon Winners to PBA Beauty Week
One student’s theme, Seven Deadly Sins, earns her way to PBA Beauty Week
EAST LANSING, MI – Douglas J Aveda Institute recently announced that it will send nine winning students to Beacon 2014, as part of the Professional Beauty Association’s (PBA) Beauty Week in Las Vegas, Nev. from July 12 to July 15.
“We are so proud that close to 10 percent of the Beacon winners come from Douglas J each year,” said Scott Weaver, owner of Douglas J Companies. “We encourage our students to apply by offering to pay for their entry fee. We do everything we can to support them as they
complete the application process from helping them put together a resume to providing a photographer to take their portfolio photos.”
One of Douglas J’s Beacon winners, Brittany Andring, gained inspiration for her theme, the “Seven Deadly Sins” from watching an episode of America’s Next Top Model. Andring is a recent graduate of Douglas J Aveda Institute in East Lansing and most enjoys hair coloring, styling and makeup application.
“In my entry, I chose three models to portray - lust, wrath and gluttony,” said Andring. “For lust, I envisioned a pin up girl with her makeup, finger wave hair style and vintage look. For wrath, I went with a Mohawk hair style, a dark smoky eye and dark lips. For gluttony, I made my model’s hair look like cotton candy and added a lollipop.”
One hundred students, along with 200 honorable mentions, were selected to attend Beacon as part of PBA Beauty Week in Las Vegas from more than 900 applicants based on the creativity, presentation and content of their resume, professional portfolio and creative marketing pieces. Beacon winners receive free tuition, and honorable mention attendees pay a small fee, to attend Beacon, which includes a full line up of education tailored specifically to them.
Directly out of high school, Andring went in a few different directions, never feeling completely fulfilled. But when a Douglas J instructor and friend encouraged her to apply to be a student at the Institute, she did. On a Thursday in January 2013, she applied to Douglas J and started
the following Monday.
“It was the very best spontaneous decision I have made to date,” said Andring. “I chose this school over others because it’s prestigious, everyone knows the name Douglas J. They teach you every aspect to be successful and they offer lifetime job placement. You get so much experience because the institute gets so much business. By the time you graduate, you are comfortable working on your own.”
Andring’s goals for attending Beacon include the opportunity to network with salon owners to help her get her foot in the door at a highend Aveda salon in the Chicago area. One day she hopes to be able to own her own salon.
“I really enjoy making customers happy. Helping them feel more beautiful than they already are is the best,” exclaimed Andring.
