PNC Volunteers Earn $3,000 for Parkwood YMCA Head Start Through

PNC Grants for Great Hours Program

Haslett, MI – The Parkwood YMCA Head Start has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the PNC Foundation, thanks to PNC employees Kathy Berkompas, Jane Molin, Linda Morgan, Lisa Zimmerman, Cosette Daher, Jay Peitsch II and Jerry Zimmerman III, who earned the grant by volunteering through the PNC Grants for Great Hours program.   PNC provided the funding in support of Grow Up Great, its $350 million multi-year bilingual program in early childhood education.

PNC employees who volunteer 40 hours or more at a qualified early childhood education center can earn a $1,000 grant for that center through the Grants for Great Hours program. A team of two to three employees who volunteer for 60 hours collectively can earn a $1,500 grant and four to 10 employees who volunteer for 100 hours collectively can earn a $3,000 grant for their center.

In 2012, PNC volunteers earned more than $400,000 for early childhood education centers through the Grants for Great Hours program. The 175 total individual and team grants nearly triples the total number of grants earned in 2011.

The grant from the PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: PNC), will allow the Parkwood YMCA to offer quality early childhood education programs.  The Kids Time Preschool, which operates September thru May and then during the summer months at the Parkwood branch as Camp Hugabee is specifically for ages 3 – 5.  A group of several staff provide a fun-filled program that helps children grow academically, physically, emotionally, and socially.  Also, there has been a focus on the “For Me, For You, For Later: First Steps to Spending, Sharing, and Saving”.  This is a program provided by PNC to help the children/parents to share experiences in developing the financial basics that will impact Here, Now, and in the Future.  During the school year, 22 children were served, and over the course of the summer another 200 children will be served.  To enhance character development, the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility are incorporated into the programs.

The PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from The PNC Financial Services Group (NYSE: PNC), actively supports organizations that provide services for the benefit of communities in which it has a significant presence. The foundation focuses its philanthropic mission on early childhood education and community and economic development, which includes the arts and culture. Through Grow Up Great, its signature cause that began in 2004, PNC has created a $350 million, multi-year initiative to help prepare children from birth to age 5 for success in school and life.
