Youthbuild Grant Awarded to Saginaw Area Training Collaboration

Midland, Michigan, September 2014 – SVRC Industries, Inc. in partnership with the Saginaw Intermediate School District, Saginaw Habitat for Humanity, Greater Michigan Construction Academy, and the City of Saginaw has been awarded a $1,015,000.00 Grant to implement Youthbuild in Saginaw, Michigan. This is SVRC Industries, Inc. second time applying for the Youthbuild Grant and intends to call the project Saginaw YouthBuild. The SVRC Industries, Inc. partnership intends to partner with Saginaw Habitat for Humanity and the City of Saginaw in providing work site construction opportunities for participants in the SVRC Youthbuild project with a goal of completing up to six remodels for low-income families in this community.  

It also proposes to train 166 (three cohorts of 122) urban, disadvantaged youth ages 16-24, with a focus on women and minority participants in academic, employability and construction skills. The geographic location for the grant to be served is the City of Saginaw and Buena Vista Charter Township. SVRC Industries, Inc. will provide construction training services through partnerships with the Greater Michigan Construction Academy and provide educational referrals to Delta College, Dream Catchers for Life- Saginaw Community Action Center, Education & Training Center- Saginaw, the Saginaw Public School District, and various alternative school locations within Saginaw County.

The proposed Saginaw Youthbuild will also provide remediation services for those individuals in-school. All program participants will have access to tutoring services in weak academic areas as identified by testing and report cards. Outcomes will be measured by the number of community service hours completed, number of work experience hours completed, literacy and numeracy gains, continuation of school enrollment or GED preparation, re-enrollment into high school or GED completion program, enrollment into an apprenticeship, post-secondary education or advanced training program and securing a quality entry level job that leads to career advancement opportunities.  This is a 3 year renewal grant.
