BWL Awarded for Innovative Training and Educational Partnerships

by Lansing Community College

The Lansing Board of Water & Light was recognized on Thursday evening for its innovative training and educational partnerships, presented by Lansing Community College President Brent Knight. The award highlighted 1st S.T.E.P. (School to Training and Employment Program), a school to work program for high school seniors.

“The BWL has a comprehensive strategy for discovering, selecting and developing a very talented and skilled workforce for all of our employees,” said General Manager J. Peter Lark. “1st S.T.E.P. is just one way we can reach the next generation’s workforce and help prepare them, too.”

Along with 1st S.T.E.P., the award recognized the supervisory and leadership training the BWL does, partnering with LCC to train new supervisors and leaders. In addition, the BWL offers a partnership and apprenticeship program through LCC for skilled trades workers. Finally, the BWL had a partnership with LCC and Capital Area Michigan Works! to provide training for the new operators of the REO Cogeneration Plant, prior to its start in 2013.

The BWL has hired 21 1st S.T.E.P. students to continue in employment in both full-time and temporary positions. Ten new students have been selected to join the program in January. For more information about 1st S.T.E.P., visit or like the Facebook page at
