New Federal Rules on Water Heaters May Mean Higher Costs for Homeowners

The Meridian Company’s licensed plumbers can help homeowners navigate the new regulations and learn about their options

EAST LANSING, MI – On Thursday, Feb. 12, The Meridian Company invited Wayne Philpotts of Major/Lozuaway & Associates, a manufacturers’ representative for A.O. Smith, a global leader of residential and commercial water heating equipment, to train their licensed plumbers on new federal regulations on water heaters.

The Department of Energy recently passed a list of new regulations for the energy efficiency of water heaters. As of April 15 of this year, water heater manufacturers will no longer be making or distributing many current water heater models — the newer models will be physically larger and up to 35 percent more expensive to buy.

“Water heaters will now be required to meet higher efficiency standards and maintain their heat longer than conventional tank heaters,” said Craig Phillipich, marketing manager at The Meridian Company. “While higher efficiency standards are a good thing for water heater upgrades, they can also pose installation challenges to homeowners with older water heater models.”

The Meridian Company urges homeowners with a water heater that is past its warranty (generally about six years) or is nearing the end of its lifespan (10 to 12 years) to consider a water heater replacement now rather than after the April 15 deadline. Many standard residential models will no longer be available to purchase after this date.

“If your water heater fails in the upcoming spring or summer, you may find it difficult to get a direct replacement. You’ll need to make some adjustments, and in the meantime you could be living without hot water,” said Phillipich.

To find out more information about the new federal regulations or to schedule a water heater consultation, homeowners can contact The Meridian Company at (517) 618-0589 or
