A recent report indicated that the Lansing region will have the highest absolute growth over any other Michigan region by 2030. The Urban Institute recently released the Mapping America’s Futures report which allows users to see all 740 “commuter zones” across the country. The Lansing region is deemed one of the state of Michigan’s 21 commuter zones. The report projects that the Lansing region will grow to 540,960 residents by 2030 which is a 16.7% increase or 77,000 people. It is important to note that Mount Pleasant will see growth by over 20% however, this equates to 30,000 people based on current population.

“The evidence is becoming more indisputable,” said Bob Trezise, President and CEO of LEAP. “The old Lansing is long gone. The new Lansing region is a fast-emerging global community, and a leading environment for business and talent.”

The Mapping America’s Futures report offers a user-friendly interface to test population scenarios with birth rates, death rates, and migration rates as the main indicating variables, and filters for age and race. The user can alter the three independent variables to be high or low rates compared to the average rates, which are derived based on historical data.

“One of the interesting pieces of data that has come from this report is that the Lansing Commuting Zone lines up perfectly with our Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), a testament to the fact that we are a strong region in terms of economic activity and commuting trends between Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham counties,” added Keith Lambert, Tri County Business Development Manager at LEAP.

The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) is a coalition of area leaders committed to building a prosperous and vibrant region where business can thrive. To do this, we help entrepreneurs start new businesses, help existing businesses grow, and attract new businesses to the region. For more information about LEAP, please visit
