Mary ZumBrunnen to Lead Talent Initiatives at Prima Civitas

EAST LANSING-Mary ZumBrunnen, former Chief Service Officer for the City of Flint, is the new Director of Talent Initiatives at East Lansing-based Prima Civitas, a nonprofit economic development organization working to grow Michigan's economy.

In her new role, Mary will direct programs that connect job candidates--including post-secondary students, non-traditional students and dislocated workers--to employers and employment resources. She also will help employers develop effective internship programs to establish their own talent pipeline.

Even as the state's unemployment picture improves, there continues to be a need to grow our talent base and ensure the job-readiness of the workforce across multiple disciplines and industries. Mary's focus will be promoting and maximizing career potential and advancing internships, cooperative education, and employment opportunities within Michigan through collaboration among employers, colleges and universities.

"Mary ZumBrunnen brings a wide range of experience, and an excellent understanding of the challenges and the opportunities Michigan faces on the talent front," said Arnold Weinfeld, Prima Civitas CEO and Board Chairman.

As Chief Service Officer for the City of Flint in 2014, Mary developed residential emergency preparedness and blight elimination initiatives. She also was a consultant to the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems as a food hub facilitator for Genesee and Saginaw counties. Previously she served as Director of the Flint National Service Accelerator for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint, and was a Coordinator for the AmeriCorps VISTA Power of We Consortium in Lansing.Mary holds a BS degree from MSU in Agriculture and Natural Resources Communications, and a Masters degree from MSU in Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies.

"My passion is improving quality of life in Michigan," said Mary. "This position will allow me to help create jobs and grow our economy. By joining Prima Civitas I can continue to empower at the local level, but also affect large scale change."

At Prima Civitas, Mary will manage and direct various programs and projects that work to match potential employees with employers such as the statewide Michigan Internship Initiative (MII). The MII developed the Employer Internship Toolkit, a free resource with detailed guidance for employers wanting to make the most of internships as a way to develop talent.
